Every Wednesday morning, Barber Hall (our large social hall) comes to life at 9 a.m. when we open the doors for our Food Pantry. North Fort Myers residents with a limited income are eligible to receive two bags of grocery items each month. The food we dispense consists of donated items and products we purchase from the local Harry Chapin Food Bank – which is part of the national network of Food Banks.
In 2006, we gave out 5,852 bags of food with an estimated retail value of $70,000. The food we purchased weighed nearly 59,426 pounds.
In addition to the Food Pantry, we provide free coffee and pastries from 9-11 a.m.
At 11 a.m., the “Veteran’s Outreach Program” provides a free complete hot meal that is open to everyone without limitation. The volunteers that staff this program cook in their own homes and then use our lovely facility to serve their clients. In 2006, they served 7,041 meals.
The church also provides other support services to help our clients (30-40% of which are homeless). These services include:; providing transportation and paying for homeless persons to get Government-issued Identification cards so they can be employed; purchasing work boots and giving out bicycles when available; getting certified copies of birth certificates when required; giving free bus passes when clients need transportation for medical appointments.
We also have a parish nurse who does clinical evaluations and makes recommendations/referrals, and, the local Health Department comes the first Wednesday of each month to do clinical testing and provide immunizations.
